Clapping After The Workout

“Mayya, why are you clapping your hands?”, asked me one lovely woman at the gym today. (I did cheer loudly after finishing a set of push ups).

I responded with:

I have two kids and two businesses.

And yet I am here, at the gym.

I am applauding myself for showing up.

Here is a technique for building habits:

Any time you do anything for yourself, make a point of celebrating it.

Celebrate it profusely.

From BJ Fogg, a Stanford professor who studied habits:

- When you do a behavior and feel a positive emotion about it, your brain pays attention.

- It essentially thinks, "Wow, that felt good. I want to do that behavior again!"

- Emotions create habits.

- Celebrating what you did right after you did it wires that habit into your brain.

So, whether you want to workout more or meditate more, make sure you congratulate and reward yourself intensely!

Doctor’s orders!

PS Kids back to school - yay to quiet house and moving forward some creative projects!
